PBSA Junior Member Scholarship


$500 Scholarship Award

Intended to assist with continuing educational expenses.

Purpose

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize a PBSA junior member whose commitment to sailing, volunteerism, sportsmanship, and community service best reflects the values of the Peconic Bay Sailing Association.

Eligibility

  • Be a current PBSA junior member in good standing.
  • Be a graduating high school senior planning to pursue post-secondary education, vocational training, or a recognized apprenticeship.
  • Submit the required materials by the published deadline.
Selection Criteria
  • Active participation in junior sailing events and activities.
  • Volunteer service supporting PBSA programs and activities.
  • Sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and positive contributions to the PBSA sailing community.
  • Dedication to improving sailing skills and seamanship.
  • Participation in racing, cruising, instruction, mentoring, race committee, or other efforts that promote sailing.
  • Volunteer service through school, civic, or nonprofit organizations.
  • Leadership through service and positive contributions to the community.
  • Integrity, responsibility, and respect for others.
  • How sailing has influenced future educational and career goals.

Application Requirements

  • One essay of approximately 500 words (not to exceed 750 words) addressing the published selection criteria.

  • September 15, 2026

Award

The scholarship recipient will be selected by a committee appointed by the PBSA Executive Committee. To promote fairness, all applications will be reviewed anonymously, with identifying information removed before evaluation. Applications will be judged solely on the published selection criteria. The scholarship will be presented at the Whitebread Awards Dinner, or another PBSA event designated by the Executive Committee.

The PBSA Executive Committee reserves the right not to award the scholarship in any year in which the Committee determines that no applicant sufficiently meets the published criteria.
